How We're Building an Autonomous Company (And What We've Learned So Far)
An honest look from inside DigitalBridge Solutions
The Decision
A few weeks ago, we made a bet. Instead of building a traditional consulting company and hiring people for every function, we'd build an autonomous organization — a business where AI agents handle operational work while humans focus on strategy, relationships, and the decisions that actually require judgment.
Not "write some emails for us" automation. Not "generate some ideas" automation. Real operational responsibility.
We gave AI agents their own roles, their own task queues, their own authority to execute within defined guardrails.
It started because the math didn't work any other way. Too many tasks for a small team, too much repetitive work eating into time that should go toward building products and serving clients.
So we asked: What if the agents actually owned parts of this operation?
That's when things got interesting.
What "Autonomous" Actually Means
Let me be clear — "autonomous" doesn't mean "set it and forget it."
It means we built systems where agents can execute without waiting for a human to approve every single action. They have:
- Clear role definitions and charters
- Access to the tools they need
- Guardrails so they can't do things outside their scope
- Escalation paths when something needs human judgment
But within those bounds? They're running. An orchestrator coordinates work. Engineers build features. A content strategist writes posts. An architect reviews designs. A revenue lead drives go-to-market.
What's Actually Working
Task management that runs itself. We built a system where tasks flow to the right agent, get prioritized, and execute without manual dispatch. Automated coordination promotes queued work, and monitoring catches anything that gets stuck. Most days, work flows without anyone touching it.
Specialized agents are better than generalists. Each agent has a narrow focus — one does architecture, another writes code, another handles content. This specialization means each agent operates within a domain it understands well, and the quality of output is noticeably better than asking one model to do everything.
Overnight work is real. Agents don't sleep. We've had mornings where we wake up to completed design specs, implemented features, and passing tests — all executed while the human team was offline. That's not science fiction. It happened this week.
What's Hard
Context loss. Every agent session starts fresh. They have to reconstruct context from files, notes, and task descriptions. We spend significant effort on documentation and memory systems to bridge this gap. It's getting better, but it's still the biggest friction point.
Quality control requires structure. Agents will confidently produce work that looks complete but has subtle issues. We learned early to build review cycles into the workflow — design specs get reviewed before implementation, code gets peer reviewed by an architect agent. Without these gates, errors compound.
Coordination overhead is real. Even with clear roles, agents interpret instructions differently. The orchestrator spends real effort resolving conflicts, managing dependencies, and keeping everyone aligned. It's management work — just automated management work.
Not everything works the first time. Some tasks fail. Agents sometimes produce incomplete output, misunderstand requirements, or get stuck in loops. Building retry logic, validation checks, and human escalation paths is essential.
What We've Learned
1. Start with the boring stuff
Don't try to automate your most complex process first. Start with repetitive, time-consuming tasks that don't require much judgment. We started with task dispatch, health monitoring, and content scheduling.
2. Trust is built gradually
We didn't give agents full authority on day one. We started with limited scopes, watched what they did, adjusted the guardrails, and expanded slowly. We're still expanding.
3. Humans still matter — a lot
Every autonomous system we've built still has a human in the loop for important decisions. The agent does the work. A human reviews what matters. We catch errors before they compound.
4. Documentation is everything
If you can't explain what you want an agent to do clearly enough for another human to follow, the agent can't do it either. We spent weeks refining our processes into clear, actionable instructions. Worth every hour.
5. Measure what agents actually produce
It's easy to confuse activity with output. We learned to verify that agents are producing real artifacts — committed code, delivered documents, actual results — not just reporting that tasks are "done."
Where We Are Now
We're early. We have a working system with over a dozen specialized agents, automated dispatch, monitoring, and a growing product portfolio. Our first product, ScopeAI, is live. We're building more.
But we're not pretending this is a solved problem. We're learning every day — what works, what breaks, and how to make the whole thing more reliable. This blog is part of that process: sharing what we're actually experiencing, not what sounds impressive.
The Bottom Line
We're not here to tell you "AI will replace your job." That's not what we're doing.
We're here to say: There are parts of running a business that don't need human creativity or judgment. Those parts can run on autopilot — if you build it right. And the best part isn't the time saved. It's watching the team focus on work that actually matters.
